Across the Mekong : The True Story of an Air America Helicopter Pilot
Published in Unknown Binding by Hildesigns Pr ()
Author: Charles O. Davis
Average review score:

very good book
If you are interested in a well written book on the secret war in Laos, this is the best I have read. The author's descriptions of the country and the people, including the many hill tribes, are what holds your attention. I learned more about the CIA"s role in the wars of Indo-China, than in any book I have read. A real page-turner and I felt I was riding along with the author in his helicopter.

real truth
Real truth is one of the rarest things that I have ever encountered.Charlie Davis is my best friend. That is because he is honest and truthful to a fault. He is also extremely intelligent, sensitive, and very articulate, in his homespun way. If you value absolute truth, that is what you will find in his book--no sugar-coating and no bull (that's another reason he is my friend).

It is a very moving and satisfying experience to have a glimpse at the private thoughts of this wonderful man. Enjoy!

Great story & illustrations!
My 3-year old son LOVES this book. My husband reads it to him multiple times every night at bedtime, at his request. It has a great lesson & the illustrations are wonderful. Adam is certainly a character that little people can relate to.

Adam Raccoon at Forever Falls
I thought this was an excellent book for my 7 year old. She learned that forever doesn't mean forever.

Addiction Treatment: A Strengths Perspective
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (09 July, 2002)
Authors: Katherine Van Wormer and Diane Rae Davis
Average review score:

Unburdened with Biases, Courageous
Reflects the latest knowledge in our field and provides clear guidance for bringing practice up to the level of our current state of knowledge. It presents addictions treatment from a truly contemporary perspective, not burdened with the traditions, vested interests, and biases that have inhibited our forward movement for years. The authors have taken a courageous stance throughout the book.

A Thorough Text for the Field
This text provides a thorough look into the field of addiction. It provides for alternatives to the dominant theme in relation to working with people whose lives have been influenced by the use of substances. In addition, the material on other addictions is a long needed addition to texts related to addictions. This complete work is a welcome addition to the library of material I use in working with addictions.

Alone With the Owl: Stories (Minnesota Voices Project, No 97)
Published in Paperback by New Rivers Press (01 July, 2000)
Author: Alan Davis
Average review score:

A Magical Collection of Stories
Alone with the Owl is a magical collection of stories, just like Rumors from the Lost World, Davis's first collection. In the two books, we meet a girl who imagines (or is she only imagining?) that she has wings, an unlikely soldier from Minnesota sent to a mythologized war in the former Yugoslavia, a minor league ballplayer who decides to committ highway robbery in the Deep South, a psychological aide who cures a schizophrenic with ketchup, a priest who has the hots for a parishioner in Fargo. The settings range from Louisiana, where the biographical notes tell us that Davis grew up, to the midwest and elsewhere. Davis writes about people from every social class and his style is a distinctive mixture of lyricism and grittiness. He's one of the best stylists now writing fiction in America. Get this book. Read it. Read it more than once. And spread the word. This is a writer to be conjured with.

A Magical Collection of Stories
His first collection, Rumors from the Lost World, was fantastic, and so the second was much anticipated. Of the first, Tim O'Brien wrote, "A magical collection of stories, one of the best I've encountered in years." Walker Percy wrote, "He has an original talent, a feel for action, a sparse yet vivid style, a sharp satirical sense, a keen eye and ear for the follies of the age." Dorothy Allison wrote in the New York Times Book Review, "Alan Davis's voice transports and sings....I kept thinking that I wouldn't mind winding up as a character in one of his stories. Odds are, he'd do me justice."

The blurbs on the back cover of this new collection say it all: "Although these stories occur in many different parts of the country, they are easthetically shaped by the landscape of Louisiana, the muddy delta, and the oily bayou - the bottomland to which all things flow." Debra Marquart (The Hunger Bone) "In Alone with the Owl, I have met a glalery of characters more thoroughly and deply than I do in half a year of my ordinary existence." Josip Navakovich (Salvation and Other Disasters)

American Heroine
Published in Paperback by Ivan R Dee, Inc. (15 April, 2000)
Author: Allen F. Davis
Average review score:

An outstanding, detailed, informative biography.
This truly outstanding and detailed biography of Jane Addams surveys the founder of Hull House, a social reformer who was one of the most admired women in American history. American Heroine recounts her life, work and ideas, providing chapters which go into far more depth and detail than most reviews of her life, probing the philosophy behind her works and the atmosphere of her times.

One of the Best Book I Ever Read
Jane Addams was a remarkable woman. This book is the best biography written of her life. She was a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in her later life. Her liberal views of American society are covered thoroughly by this author in his chapters of her early work at Hull House, and her later work for world peace. A must read book for every woman, because Jane Addams was truly an American woman.

This brilliantly written novelette goes right for the heart. The creativity and Shakespearean wit are deftly intertwined with the timelessly poignant way Ms. Davis searches for the true essence of the human existence. This is truly the work of a writer who has mastered her craft. Ms. Davis has written a children's book for eternity.

Insightful and creative. A non-stop thrill ride!!!!
Davis's use of humor intrigues the reader and keeps you wanting more

And the Angels Sing
Published in Hardcover by Permanent Press (May, 1996)
Author: J. Madison Davis
Average review score:

Excellent; good period details
I have enjoyed this author's earlier books, The Murder of Frau Schutz, White Rook, and Red Knight. These books always seem well-researched and accurate in detail. This, in turn, adds greatly to the reader's being able to engulf himself or herself in the plot. Carl, the protagonist, is a so familiar story of big dreams clashing with reality and forces beyond his control. It is easy to see many real people like him daily. Very few lounge singers started out with that result as their dream. An excellent read.

Wow
I like angels, especially their Angel food cake. It is yummy in my tummy

Simple, elegant reading!
Doris Davis' book is one of those rare reads that you simply can't put down until the end. In her effortless manner of storytelling, she introduces us to the unseen world in a way that is believable as well as reassuring. The author's personality is engaging and her spiritual energy seeps through the pages to the reader. It is a great book for those just beginning their spiritual quest, as well as for those seasoned explorers wishing to reconnect with something enlivening and real. Go buy this book - then pass it on to a friend!

Honest Talk
This is not a religous tome or a writing by some off-the-wall person who thinks she has psychic capabilities and can reach your long-lost loved ones and help you find 'closure'. This is touching history written in the honest, straightforward language only a true Southern grandmother knows how to use. Her experiences with "The Guys" are expressed as just that - her experiences. She is simply telling you what she knows. We should be grateful that the followed the wishes of "The Guys" and was willing to share this personal account with us.

Army Aviation in Vietnam 1963-1966: An Illustrated History of Unit Insignia Aircraft Camouflage & Makings (Army Aviation in Vietnam)
Published in Hardcover by Huey Co Inc (July, 2000)
Authors: Ralph B. Young and Steve Davis
Average review score:

Long Overdue Book
The "Army Aviation in Vietnam" series of books are a welcome and long overdue addition to the library of U.S. military history. As a current Army aviator, I find this series invaluable in allowing me to trace the history of Army aviators and their units.

Rich in detail, Mr. Young's work is unequaled and fills a gap that has existed for quite a while. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of Army aviation or the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war.

Army Aviation in Vietnam 1963-1966
This is the second of Ralph Young's series of fine books on the insignia and units of the Army Aviation units in Vietnam, both fixed wing and helicopter. I'm proud to own both of the existing books, and will buy each and every one as they are produced. This is a labor of love for Ralph, and it is a privilege to accompany him as he recognizes members of all the helicopter units that were in RVN at different times of the war. He is a walking encyclopedia, and his remarkable books show this. My unit, the 175th OUTLAWS is displayed correctly and prominently, and I am looking forward to the third edition of his series, which will feature my bird, Outlaw 23, representing the fine aviation art his illustrator is capable of. History of the individual units and their personnel who mattered are also included in this excellent work. Put it on your bookshelf!
